Meet us in mind, body, emotion and spirit as we participate in Indigenous healing methods on and with the land. This collective experience will facilitate an immersion into traditional Indigenous healing methods and medicines through the cultural expertise of Xhastin, a practitioner of Traditional Medicines, First Nations Health, and a Certified First Nations Doula, and her team.

We will be joined by an Elder to offer a prayer, start our day well, and share their experiences and wisdom on what health and healing mean in this territory.

Grab your breakfast and join our Keynote address by Indigenous Pharmacy Professionals of Canada Executive Director Amy Lamb, as she outlines the pharmacy advocacy and activism targets supporting Indigenous healing and self-determination. Be guided through the collective identity of advocacy movements, and be inspired by the strength and power you find when working for a purpose and within a community.

10:00 AM - 11:00 AMSuccessful Upstream Navigation: Systems and Structures in Indigenous Health

Presented by First Nations Pharmacist, Kierra FineDay, Director of Non-Insured Health Benefits for the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations. Colonization violently and systematically disrupted Indigenous health and healing practices and replaced them with segregated, underfunded, Eurocentric health systems. Today, Indigenous Peoples experience the legacy of historical harms and the realities of contemporary barriers to health equity. Upstream factors, including governments, healthcare funding, healthcare regulations, and jurisdictional barriers, require complex navigation strategies. Join us as we learn how to paddle through turbulent waters to bring health home to our communities downriver.


11:00 AM - 12:00 PMPharmacy Learning About Indigenous Traditional (PLANT) Medicines Project

Presented by Traditional Medicines Knowledge Keeper and Elder Barb Whyte and Project Researcher Olivia Burton, learn about this innovative project to bridge the knowledge gap between pharmacy training and Indigenous medicines, and the role of pharmacy professionals in supporting the safe use of traditional medicines. Olivia will provide an overview of the development, delivery, and the key outcomes of the PLANT Medicines Project. Elder Barb Whyte {Billy} will highlight common plants used throughout the Pacific Coast Island Health region.

1:00 PM- 2:15 PMNurturing PrEP/HIV Treatment Awareness in Indigenous Patients and Communities

Dr. Jaris Swidrovich will begin this workshop by presenting his research findings concerning the awareness of PrEP and HIV treatments among Indigenous Peoples. Attendees will be further introduced to the structural, systemic, jurisdictional and geographical barriers facing Indigenous patients. Participants will be invited to join smaller groups of shared practice settings to discuss their experiences with HIV treatment and/or prevention among their Indigenous (and non-Indigenous) patients, and collectively identify strategies for enhancing patient education, research, and programming provided by pharmacy professionals.

Join Laura McDonald, owner of Epic Pharmacy (Tofino, BC), as she shares her extensive experience in forming reciprocal partnerships with Indigenous communities, serving remote and isolated locations, and engaging in grants and research to build innovations in the delivery of accessible and culturally safe care.


3:30 PM - 4:30 PMAuthentic Patient & Community Relationships Panel

Join a panel of experts as they share their experiences in building trusting relationships with Indigenous patients and their communication strategies that foster capacity, competence, and confidence.

Join us for reflections on the day, on the work of the Indigenous Pharmacy Professionals of Canada, the evolution of pharmacy practice, and to close the day in a good way.

Land-based Cultural Healing Activity: Join the board and Indigenous pharmacy professionals for a land-based cultural healing activity at Xhastin's Healing Journey, led by a Xhastin, also known as Yvonne Jack, a proud member of the Taku River Tlingit First Nation. Xhastin has created a unique healing space that reflects her vision and years of work in family and health services. With a background in Traditional Medicines, First Nations Health, and as a Certified First Nations Doula, Xhastin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her work. This day will end at 3 PM and include lunch and transportation to and from the venue. Spend the day in collective, immersive, spiritual healing on and with the land.
